# iPhone Duo Simulator in Xcode: Setup & Testing

> Use Xcode and Device Hub to run an iOS app on the iPhone Duo Simulator and observe display, fold and orientation changes during one continuous task. Plurigent’s Online Simulator instead previews a design or webpage; it does not execute a native iOS app or replace runtime testing.

Author: Plurigent
Content version: 0.13.1
Source review: Oct 4, 2026
Applies to: Xcode 27.1 beta; iPhone Duo Simulator runtime; Device Hub; iOS 27.1 SDK
Verification status: Duo toolchain entry and host table reviewed October 4, 2026. Device Hub and canvas-override instructions retain their documented source scope; listed limitations retain the September 23 release-note snapshot. No native Simulator run or physical-device measurement is claimed.

Set up the iPhone Duo Simulator in Xcode 27.1 beta. Install the runtime, open Device Hub and test native apps across display, fold and orientation changes.

Scope: official sources and practical guidance. Runtime measurements and hands-on observations are labeled separately and should be rechecked against the stated versions.

## What do I need before launching the iPhone Duo Simulator?

Evidence type: Official information

At the October 4 review, Apple’s Duo hub still points to Xcode 27.1 beta. The requirements table lists macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later for that release. Check the linked setup guide for the complete host, SDK and runtime combination, including the retained Apple silicon requirement.

This page assumes a compatible native toolchain. It explains running app code and recording behavior; use the Online Simulator when the task is presenting a design rather than executing an iOS build.

| Prerequisite | Current value | Status |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Xcode | 27.1 beta | Official |
| macOS | Tahoe 26.6 or later | Official |
| Mac | Apple silicon | Official |
| SDK/runtime | iOS 27.1 / iPhone Duo simulator | Official path |

## How do I install and launch the iPhone Duo Simulator?

Evidence type: Practical guidance

Get Xcode 27.1 beta from Apple’s developer downloads. Open Device Hub from Xcode’s Open Developer Tool menu, then select or add an iPhone Duo simulator with its matching runtime. If the runtime is not installed, complete the download shown by Xcode before running the app.

Choose that simulator as the project’s run destination. Device Hub provides open, close, rotate and fold controls. The September 23 release-note snapshot warns that first launch can take several minutes; check startup feedback and the notes for your build before diagnosing an app problem.

## Preview a view on the alternative display

Evidence type: Official information

The Xcode 27.1 beta notes reviewed on September 23 describe a Display group in the canvas overrides picker for inspecting the alternative display. This is a documented preview workflow, not a new execution check. It does not replace running navigation, keyboard and restoration flows in Simulator.

## A repeatable simulator workflow

Evidence type: Practical guidance

Do not test poses as isolated screenshots. Keep one task alive while you change the simulated device state so layout continuity, navigation, keyboard state, requests, and scroll position can be observed together.

For each run, record the starting pose, action, transition, expected behavior, actual behavior, and evidence. Repeat the same task in compact and roomy spaces before changing the implementation.

| Step | Action | Record |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Launch the same build in the iPhone Duo simulator | Xcode build, runtime, app build |
| 2 | Complete a representative task in the starting pose | Selection, navigation, input, scroll |
| 3 | Open, close, rotate, or fold in Device Hub | Exact transition and visible layout change |
| 4 | Continue the same task after the transition | State preserved, controls reachable, requests stable |
| 5 | Repeat with Split View or relevant system UI | Differences in safe area, margins, and bars |

## Known Simulator limitations

Evidence type: Official information

In the Xcode 27.1 beta release-note snapshot reviewed September 23, first launch may take several minutes, StandBy is unavailable, and running or debugging most app extensions is unavailable in the Duo runtime.

These are dated tooling notes, not freshly reproduced results or claims about a later build or physical device. Check the exact release notes and record unsupported test states as not tested, rather than silently marking an app pass or failure.

## Move from Simulator observation to a testing record

Evidence type: Practical guidance

Use the App Testing guide to turn simulator observations into a regression matrix. Use Plurigent’s online Simulator for visual exploration and discussion, but keep Device Hub as the source of iOS simulator behavior.

## Make a layout test repeatable

Evidence type: Practical guidance

Use the Safe Area reference table to compare known layouts, then read the small runtime example only when you need values from your own app. Keep the app containers identical while changing a simulator state.

For each run, record the Xcode version/build, SDK and runtime, app commit/build, display, window size, orientation, posture, visible system bars and keyboard/input state. Save the console snapshot with a screenshot. Keep simulator observations separate from physical-device measurements and the Online Simulator’s illustrative geometry.

- Start with one full-window configuration and save its baseline.
- Change one supported condition, then wait for layout before capturing again.
- Compare the new values with the baseline; record unsupported states as not tested.
- Reproduce any issue inside the actual app hierarchy before proposing a universal inset value.
